An event of a week ago has brought to mind just how careful we all must be in agreeing to meet someone we have talked with via e-mail, some part of the internet, and from IRC.

In an upstate town called Plattekill, NY, a man named Roger Stabler was shot and killed by the man his wife had agreed to meet in person. Roger's IRC nick was CntryMstr and a nicer man on IRC you would never hope to meet. I met him last summer in a channel called #Slavepit and we got to be good friends over the months that I knew him. I also met his wife but didn't know it was his wife. Her IRC nick was heartbrok. I don't know much about their situation except for rumor. And that rumor was that although Roger was a Dom and Ruth a sub, Ruth was not HIS sub. She met a man on IRC from Jacksonville, Florida, who claimed to be a Dom and eventually agreed to a real life meeting. "Pete" Dobson drove from Jacksonville to Plattekill to spend time with Ruth/heartbrok. Somehow, an argument broke out between Ruth and her husband and Pete pulled out a gun and shot Roger once, killing him apparently instantly.

I met Pete on IRC too last year. His nick was Pete39. All I really remember about him was that he SAID he was a Dom and he wanted to come and visit me after just a brief chat on line. He liked to "play" on IRC a lot and I remember him hitting on all the subs on line. At one time he really pushed me about a visit where I am and right now, as I write this, I am so grateful that I was not THAT lonely or desperate to ever say yes.

To anyone who does actually read this, whatever you do, please, please be careful who you do it with. No one seems to know the real reason why Pete killed Roger and probably no one will ever know. The police have the computers in custody now that both Rogerand Ruth and Pete chatted on trying to retrieve conversations between Pete and Ruth to determine if there was ever any discussion of killing Roger. The police seem to think it was a set-up.

Submissives being brutalized by Doms they have met on line or by e-mail and Doms being murdered is certainly not what any of us want to ever see happen. But these things have to make us more aware that there are real weirdos out there and they ALL have computers. We need to find a way, as a community, to help all of us play safe, sane and consensual.
